Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Speedway Collectibles & Disc in Brandon, MS. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.

  2. Ask if they buy the whole lot or select pieces

Some shops write one number for the box. Some pull the coins they can use. Neither is wrong. Ask which they do before they start. If you need everything gone today, say that. If you only want to sell the silver, say that too.

  3. Bullion and collector coins are different conversations

Melt moves with the market. A key date does not. Say what you think you have, then let them look. Mixing “it’s old so it must be rare” with a junk-silver bag slows everyone down. Sort in your mind: weight versus date.

  4. You do not have to announce what you paid

“I have three thousand in this” is not a grade or a melt value. It puts the dealer on defense and does not change what the coin is. Tell them what it is, where it came from if that matters, and what you want to do. Let the piece speak, then talk numbers.

  5. If you feel rushed, you can pause

You are allowed to say you need a minute. You are allowed to pack up and think. You are not required to decide while someone is waiting behind you — step aside and let them go. A good shop would rather you be sure than sorry.
