Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Markham Numismatics - Coin Appraiser in Corona, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

   Call ahead with a large collection or an estate

   A suitcase is not a walk-in impulse. Tell them roughly what you have and when you can come. They may want a second set of hands or a block of time. That is how you get a fair look instead of a glance between other customers.

   Keep paper money flat and in sleeves if you have them

   Do not fold old notes to “fit the envelope.” Do not rubber-band a stack of large-size bills. Do not tape tears. Bring them as they are. Currency people would rather see an honest wrinkle than a new crease you added in the car.

   Be present when it is your turn

   Take the call outside. Pull the earbuds. The dealer is about to look at your coins or pull something you asked for. A face-to-face minute is worth more than a half-distracted twenty. If you need to text a spouse about a number, say so and step aside.

   Follow the house rules without a debate

   Bags on the floor, backpacks zipped, one person at the glass — shops set these for a reason. Argue about it and the visit is already off. If a rule is unclear, ask. If it is clear, do it.

   What is in the case today may be gone tomorrow

   Coin shops turn inventory. A picture from last month is not a hold. If you want a date or a grade, call or start a want list. Showing up and hoping the exact piece is still there is how people get disappointed.
